O'MalleyWASHINGTON – St. Louis lawyer Kevin O’Malley appears to be on his way to a relatively quick confirmation to become ambassador to Ireland.

He received mostly gentle questioning from senators before a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee considering his nomination and that of four others, including ambassador nominees to Turkey and France. Sens. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. gave him bipartisan support in short introductory speeches, and the senator chairing the committee said he hoped to expedite getting O’Malley and other nominees before the full Senate for approval.

O’Malley, who was nominated last month by President Barack Obama, said he believes there is “an unbreakable bond and a deep kinship between the people of the United States and the people of Ireland.” He pointed out that many of the founders and soldiers in the Revolutionary Army were Irish, and that the two countries have maintained strong bonds in trade and security. The U.S. and Ireland have $38 billion in annual trade.

000661c2-642Venture capital funds supported under the Enterprise Ireland Seed and Venture Capital Programmes made 153 investments with a value of €59 million in 94 Irish-based companies last year, a new report showed.

That was up 9 per cent from the €54 million invested in 84 Irish companies in 2012 under the schemes.

The capital under management through Enterprise Ireland’s Seed and Venture Capital Programme 2007-2012 has now reached close to €700 million, the programme’s annual report showed.

Science Foundation of IrelandSFI Targeted Research Professorship Programme 2014 opens for applications 

Dublin, 11 July 2014 – The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mr Richard Buton, T.D. together with the Minister for Research and Innovation, Mr Sean Sherlock, T.D. today announced a major new drive by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) to attract the world’s top research talent to the seven Irish universities. The Targeted SFI Research Professorship Programme 2014 will be delivered by Science Foundation Ireland and will provide research funding of approximately €5 million for each successful applicant. Attracting top international research Professors is a critical part of the Government’s strategy to build research capacity in key areas of economic importance.

000661c2-642Enterprise Ireland client companies saw the best export growth and net job creation last year in over a decade, its annual report shows today.

EI companies exported a record €17.1 billion worth of goods and services in 2013, up 8% on the previous year.

They also created a net increase of 5,442 new jobs – the largest net increase in ten years. Enterprise Ireland said this highlights the clear link between strong export growth in new and existing worldwide markets, and job creation here.
