This is a good article, and done with a clear overview of ‘the backstop’ and Brexit, yet with an Irish American viewpoint.
How Theresa May’s Brexit Deal Collapsed
The Return of the Irish Question
British Prime Minister Theresa May had hoped that the third time would do the trick. After failing twice to get her withdrawal agreement with the EU through Parliament, she was gearing up for a fresh attempt last week, until she was blocked by the Speaker of the House of Commons and by the European Council. The Speaker declared that the British government could not put substantively the same motion before Parliament twice in the same legislative session. The Council had refused to modify the withdrawal agreement, which made the Speaker’s decision unavoidable, and it later imposed unexpectedly firm terms on May’s request for an extension. She had requested a short extension to conclude by June 30, knowing that her government could not now meet its schedued exit date of March 29.
What a wonderful week! We kicked off on Sunday the 10th by marching in Philadelphia’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, led by our member, Sean McMenamin, the 2019 Grand Marshal. After the parade, we joined our community partners, the Irish Immigration Center, Philadelphia Gaelic Athletic Association, Brehon Law Societyfor our annual parade party.
Special thanks to our parade sponsor, The Plough & the Stars, and Consul General Ciaran Madden and Deputy Consul General Eimer Friel for their loyal support of our Irish Community in Philadelphia.
Throughout the week we worked with our partners at Enterprise Ireland, Pennsylvania’s Department of Community & Economic Development, Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce, Select Greater Philadelphia, and members from Littus to host delegations of Irish business owners, Irish government representatives from Tipperary, Mayo, and Sligo County County Councils, and the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland.
We are proud to collaborate with both U.S. and Irish government agencies to further promote the development of economic and cultural ties between the Isle of Ireland and the Greater Philadelphia Region.
We are excited to see Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening, which celebrates the Island of Ireland and St. Patrick, in Philadelphia this week. Many thanks to the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and BOMA for working with us to coordinate outreach efforts.

Want to discover your Irish and Scots-Irish ancestors?
Many people believe that researching Irish ancestors is impossible because of the destruction of the Public Record Office in 1922. While many records were destroyed, others survived and large collections have come online in recent years. Read More
