Currently chief operating officer at the European External Action Service, Irishman David O’Sullivan has been appointed future EU ambassador to the US earlier this year and will take office later this fall.

O’Sullivan has over 30 years of service at the European Commission with experience in a vast number of policy areas.
Although his main task will obviously be to promote and enhance transatlantic relations at large, experts think that his appointment shows that TTIP is the main priority for the EU in Washington over the next few years, as “the case for O’Sullivan is that he’s an expert who understands the nitty-gritty of trade negotiations.”

If you want to read more about what the incoming Ambassador to the United States has to say about TTIP, I would recommend reading his excellent article in the Irish Times, where he makes a strong case for TTIP helping his native Ireland.

Our lensman pal Dónal McCann opened his compelling exhibition on my mayoral year at the Golden Thread Gallery on Thursday night as part of the Belfast Festival at Queen’s.

Dónal took 10,000 pictures on the trail with me but reduced that number to around 600 for his website, to 65 for the exhibition catalogue and to just 24 for the gallery walls.

You can see the final two dozen yourself at the Golden Thread Gallery throughout this month but consider yourself invited to the launch of the catalogue — which has a preface by veteran Belfast journo Deric Henderson — on Saturday 18 October.

That doyen of Belfast journalism Ivan Little penned words to accompany a selection of Dónal’s photos for a special Belfast Telegraph spread.

Dónal, a West Belfast man, is a master-photographer and his pictures speak to the true spirit of Belfast.

What brought a Nobel Prize scientist, an Emmy award winning actress, a co-founder of the Betty Ford Clinic, the doctor who discovered the link between aspirin and heart health, the man who played a huge role in writing the constitution of Kurdistan, the head of North America’s largest private hospital chain, the couple who fixed tragically deformed children and gave them their lives back and dozens of doctors and scientists from across the United States together in Manhattan last night?

That would be the Irish America Magazine first ever Health and Life Sciences Awards, which took place in the fabled New York Yacht Club last night co-presented by ICON Clinical Research, IABCN Ambassador Club Member and Ireland’s leading drug research company with 11,000 employees.  ICON was represented by CEO Ciaran Murray and a dedicated staff from Dublin.
