Member News from Free Library: Easter Rising Program

Thursday, June 2 | 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Join us as Brooklyn novelist Colm Tóibín and award-winning poet Eavan Boland discuss contemporary Irish society with journalist Sadhbh Walshe as moderator. The Rosenbach and the Free Library of Philadelphia are proud to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising with these leading contemporary Irish and Irish-American writers, who will reflect on the ways independence and nationhood have shaped Ireland today.

Easter Rising 100th Anniversary Commemorative Books

Last Words Booklet Commemorates Ireland’s Heroes of 1916

Last Words is an illustrated and edited booklet produced in cooperation with the Irish Government in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rebellion, The Rising, in Dublin, Ireland in 1916.

Based on the personal archives kept by the curator of Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin, it contains black and white photographs of all 16 men executed during The Rising and their last words.

It also contains readings from personal diaries, letters, first-hand recollections and first-hand accounts of family members, friends, wives and the priests who performed the Last Rites of the 16 men executed in the aftermath of this historic event.

The booklet was produced in conjunction with a March 20^th commemorative event at the Irish Center in Mt. Airy, “Philadelphia Artists and Actors Remember 1916 in Art & Words.”

The event was made possible by a grant from the Irish Government and Irish American Business Chamber Network, IABCN.

Older Than Ireland

Older Than Ireland is a landmark documentary which looks at 100 years of life as seen through the eyes of 30 Irish centenarians, including Ireland’s oldest citizen on record, Kathleen Snavely (113) and Ireland’s oldest ever man, Luke Dolan (108).
