Carfagno McTague Inquirer AdHSB Sponsors Lecture Series Featuring Barron’s Editor Jim McTague ’71 – Monday, April 13th at 6.30 pm

Saint Joseph’s University’s Haub School of Business and the Dean’s Leadership Program (DLP) will present the 2015 Carfango Lecture Series, featuring Washington D.C. editor of Barron’s, the Dow Jones Business and Financial Weekly, Jim McTague ’71, on Monday, April 13, at 6:30 p.m.

The event will be moderated by Joe DiStefano, blogger and business columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, and former SJU lecturer. DiStefano will prompt McTague in a Q&A style format, and will lead an audience Q&A following the formal session.

A widely acclaimed economic reporter and author of the Crapshoot Investing: How Tech-Savvy Traders and Clueless Regulators Turned the Stock Market into a Casino (Financial Times, 2011), McTague joined Barron’s in 1994 after working for several publications, including American Banker, USA Today, The Dallas Times Herald, and The Philadelphia Daily News. He has covered Capitol Hill since 1984 and the White House since 1993.

Titled “What’s on the Traffic Cam at the Intersection of Wall Street and Pennsylvania Avenue,” McTague’s presentation will offer an economic state of the union from Capitol Hill, touching on the impact of the bi-partisan politics on the economy, and how the structure of the stock market has become dominated by artificial intelligence.

McTague earned a B.S. in English from Saint Joseph’s and a Master’s in English from Penn State University, but began his college career on the pre-med track and enrolled in classes within the mathematics department before realizing his dream was to become a magazine writer.

“I received an excellent, well-rounded education from St. Joe’s,” says McTague. “But learning doesn’t stop when you leave the campus. The University gives you the tools to keep acquiring knowledge long after you graduate.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Jim McTague back to campus,” says Dean of the Haub School of Business, Joseph A. DiAngelo Jr., Ed.D. ’70. “His experience and expertise is relevant to all of our students – both in the business school and the college of arts & sciences.”

“The Anthony Carfagno Lecture Series provides an opportunity for engaging and informative discussions on campus,” says Vana Zervanos ’07 (MBA), associate dean of the Haub School of Business. “I am grateful to Jim McTague, Joe DiStefano, and the students in the Dean’s Leadership Program for contributing to what I believe will be a strong and educational event for this year.”

McTague is as excited to return to campus as SJU is to host him. “I am always pleased to come back to campus,” he says. “And I am thrilled that Saint Joseph’s now has this fabulous business school that continues to grow. I wish more SJU graduates would come to work on Capitol Hill!”

Complimentary copies of Crapshoot Investing will be available at the event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in Mandeville Hall and is free and open to the public. For more information or to register, please click HERE.
