Philly.com

Jamie Robinson got the idea for TAPP while enjoying a Guinness at McShea’s, his favorite pub in Ardmore. He wondered whether a sensor placed in a beer tap could help beer makers learn more about their customers and better market their products.

Now, West Conshohocken-based TAPP Technologies wants to provide beer companies with tools to engage consumers between their bar seat and the beer tap. At its heart is a WiFi-enabled sensor placed inside a beer tap that not only reports essential usage data but also enables beer companies to run interactive campaigns to entice drinkers, especially millennials.

TAPP’s sensor was developed with Irish Chamber member, West Conshohocken-based Ciright Systems, which manufactures TAPP’s sensors and owns part of the company. Robinson noted that TAPP’s patents are viable in more than 140 countries; the company hopes to launch in China, India, and Western Europe in the next three years.

From Select Greater Philadelphia

The average tech company in San Francisco’s Bay area spends $56 million per year to run its operations.

In Philadelphia, that expenditure is $40.5 million.  Bloomberg recently published an article in which it ranked Philadelphia as the 5th least expensive city in the U.S. to live, work, and run a business.

“Even though there are higher wages [in San Francisco], the cost of living for employees is even higher,” said Kristin Sexton, CBRE’s managing director of labor analytics, in the article. “It’s a hit to both the employer and the employee. They’re paying higher wages and not getting that quality of life.”

Businesses and tech workers alike are looking at Greater Philadelphia; it was ranked a top 10 region for venture capital in the U.S. by the National Venture Capital Association in 2015.
